Neil's parents are divorced from "summary" of The Pistachio Prescription by Paula Danziger

When Neil was in second grade, his parents got divorced. That was a long time ago. They had lived in the same house, but they did not live together. It was not like they had a big fight or anything. It was just that they did not want to be married to each other anymore. Neil's dad moved out of the house to an apartment. His mom stayed in the house. Neil lived with his dad during the week and with his mom on weekends. Neil's dad was a nice guy. He was fun to be around. He took Neil to basketball games and movies. They went out for pizza and ice cream. They had a good time together. Neil's dad let him have a lot of freedom. He was not strict like his mom. Neil liked spending time with his dad. He felt comfortable with him. Neil's mom was different. She was more serious than his dad. She had rules and expectations. She wanted Neil to do well in school. She made him study and do his homework. She cooked healthy meals and made him eat vegetables. She did not let him stay up late or watch too much TV. Neil's mom was always worrying about him. She asked him about school and friends. She wanted to make sure he was safe and happy. Neil loved both his parents. They were good people, but they were not good together. They argued a lot when they were married. They did not agree on things. They did not communicate well. They were not happy. Neil understood why they got divorced. He knew it was better for them to be apart. He accepted their decision. He did not blame himself for their divorce. He knew it was not his fault. He wished they could all live in the same house, but he knew it was not possible. He had to adjust to his new life.
