Having too many choices can increase our expectations from "summary" of The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz

When we are faced with a multitude of options, we tend to believe that one of them must be perfect. After all, with so many choices available, there must be one that meets all our requirements and fulfills all our desires. This belief sets our expectations sky-high, as we become convinced that the ideal choice is out there, waiting to be discovered. However, the reality is that no option is flawless, and the quest for perfection is often an exercise in futility. When we have too many choices, we raise our expectations to an unrealistic level, making it difficult for any option to measure up. As a result, we are left feeling disappointed and dissatisfied, even if the choice we make is objectively a good one. Moreover, having a plethora of options can lead us to constantly second-guess our decisions. With so many alternatives available, we are haunted by the fear of missing out on something better. This fear can paralyze us, preventing us from fully committing to our choices and enjoying the outcomes. In this way, an abundance of options not only raises our expectations but also creates a sense of uncertainty and anxiety.
