Trees have a unique ability to adapt to their environment from "summary" of The Overstory: A Novel by Richard Powers

Trees are the consummate outsider. They can't move. They can't get up and walk away. They can only stand here and endure, until they are destroyed. Trees know what it means to be rootless. They know what it means to lose a home. They know what it means to be stripped of everything. But they never give up. They stand tall and they adapt. They find a way to survive, no matter what. In the face of adversity, trees do not despair. They do not give in to hopelessness. Instead, they innovate. They change. They evolve. Trees have the incredible ability to adapt to their environment. They can withstand harsh weather, nutrient-poor soil, and even human interference. They have a resilience that is unmatched in the natural world. Trees have been around for millions of years. They have seen empires rise and fall. They have witnessed countless changes in the world around them. And yet, they have remained steadfast. They have continued to grow, to thrive, to adapt. Trees understand that in order to survive, they must be flexible. They must be willing to change with the times. They must be willing to embrace the unknown. The adaptability of trees is a lesson for all of us. In a world that is constantly changing, we must learn to be like trees. We must learn to be resilient. We must learn to be flexible. We must learn to adapt. Just as trees have found a way to thrive in even the harshest of conditions, so too must we find a way to thrive in the face of adversity. We must take inspiration from the trees and learn to adapt to our environment, no matter what challenges may come our way.
