Species evolve through natural selection from "summary" of The Origin of Species (Deluxe Library Binding) (Annotated) by Charles Darwin

The process of natural selection, as I have described in great detail, is the mechanism by which species evolve over time. It is a process of differential survival and reproduction that leads to the gradual change of populations. In nature, individuals within a population exhibit variation in their traits. Some of these variations are heritable, meaning they can be passed down from one generation to the next. The environment in which these individuals live presents challenges and opportunities for survival and reproduction. Individuals with traits that are better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on their advantageous traits to their offspring. Over time, these advantageous traits become more common in the population, while less advantageous traits may decrease in frequency or disappear altogether. This process of "survival of the fittest" leads to the gradual adaptation of populations to their environments. It is through this mechanism that species evolve and change over time, ultimately leading to the diversity of life we see on Earth today. It is important to note that natural selection is not a random process, but rather a result of the interaction between organisms and their environment. The environment selects for certain traits that increase an individual's chances of survival and reproduction, shaping the characteristics of populations over generations. Through careful observation and meticulous study of the natural world, I have come to understand and appreciate the power of natural selection in driving the process of evolution. It is a beautifully simple yet incredibly powerful mechanism that explains the diversity and complexity of life on our planet.
