The village respects Santiago’s efforts from "summary" of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

In the small village by the sea, Santiago was known as an old man who had once been a great fisherman. His fellow villagers remembered the days when he would catch the biggest fish, bringing them back to shore with pride. But now, Santiago's luck had turned, and he had gone eighty-four days without catching a single fish. Despite his streak of bad luck, the villagers still respected Santiago. They saw the determination in his eyes as he set out each day in his small boat, hoping that today would be the day he finally caught something.
