The old man was tired. The great fish he had hooked was gone, taken by the sharks. In the dark water, the predators had moved in fast and deadly. He had fought off the sharks as best he could, stabbing at them with his harpoon, his hands raw and bleeding. But it was no use. The sharks kept coming, tearing away the flesh of the magnificent marlin, leaving only skeleton and skin.
As he watched the sharks devour his prize, the old man felt a deep sense of loss. He had battled the fish for days, enduring sunburn and exhaustion, hunger and thirst. He had faced down loneliness and despair, clinging to the hope of a great victory. And now, it was all for nothing. The sharks had won.
