The marlin is eaten by sharks from "summary" of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

The old man was tired. The great fish he had hooked was gone, taken by the sharks. In the dark water, the predators had moved in fast and deadly. He had fought off the sharks as best he could, stabbing at them with his harpoon, his hands raw and bleeding. But it was no use. The sharks kept coming, tearing away the flesh of the magnificent marlin, leaving only skeleton and skin. As he watched the sharks devour his prize, the old man felt a deep sense of loss. He had battled the fish for days, enduring sunburn and exhaustion, hunger and thirst. He had faced down loneliness and despair, clinging to the hope of a great victory. And now, it was all for nothing. The sharks had won. But even in his defeat, the old man found a kind of peace. He had done what he set out to do - he had proven himself against the elements, against the fish, against the sharks. He had shown his skill and his courage, his determination and his endurance. And though the fish was lost, the old man knew that he had not been beaten. He would go out again, he would fish again. He would keep on fighting, keep on living, until the end. And so, as he sailed back to shore, the old man did not feel defeated. He felt proud, and strong, and ready for whatever came next. The sea was still vast and full of mysteries, the fish were still waiting to be caught. And though the marlin was gone, its spirit lived on in the old man's heart. He was not alone. He was not afraid. He was a fisherman, and he would keep on fishing, no matter what.
