Santiago had battled against the marlin for days, his hands raw and his body weary from the relentless struggle at sea. When he finally caught the giant fish and lashed it to the side of his skiff, he felt a sense of triumph wash over him. But as the sharks closed in on his prize, Santiago knew that his victory would be short-lived. One by one, the sharks tore into the marlin, their sharp teeth ripping through the flesh and leaving behind nothing but a skeleton.
