Deterring migration harms marginalized communities from "summary" of The Next Great Migration by Sonia Shah
When governments and institutions implement policies to deter migration, they often fail to consider the impact on marginalized communities. These communities are disproportionately affected by the consequences of restricted movement, as they are more likely to be pushed to migrate due to environmental or economic pressures. By erecting barriers to migration, policymakers are essentially denying these marginalized groups the opportunity to improve their circumstances and seek a better life elsewhere. Furthermore, deterring migration can exacerbate existing inequalities and injustices faced by marginalized communities. In many cases, these communities are already marginalized due to historical injustices and systemic discrimination. By preventing them from migrating, policymakers are perpetuating this cycle of marginalization and denying them the chance to escape from oppressive conditions. Moreover, deterring migration can lead to increased vulnerability and exploitation of marginalized communities. When individuals are unable to migrate through legal channels, they may be forced to resort to dangerous and illegal means to seek opportunities elsewhere. This can make them more susceptible to exploitation, trafficking, and abuse, further marginalizing them and putting them at risk of harm.- By deterring migration, policymakers are not addressing the root causes of why people migrate in the first place. Instead of investing in solutions that address the environmental, economic, and social factors that drive migration, they are simply trying to keep people out. This shortsighted approach only serves to harm marginalized communities and perpetuate the cycle of inequality and injustice that they are already facing.
