Economic hit men manipulate developing countries from "summary" of The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins

The job of an economic hit man is to identify countries with resources that corporations covet. Once a target is identified, we shower its leaders with gifts - things like loans, luxury cars, and fancy technology - which they gladly accept, often without any intention of paying them back. These gifts come with strings attached, of course. The goal is to make these leaders indebted to us, both financially and politically. Once we have them in our pocket, we can then manipulate them into making decisions that benefit our corporate interests. We convince them to build infrastructure projects that they don't need and can't afford, projects that are built by our own contractors and that generate huge profits for our corporations. In the end, these countries are left with massive debts that they can never repay, debts that give us even more leverage over them. If a leader refuses to play ball, we have other, more sinister methods at our disposal. We can foment unrest and instability, using our connections to intelligence agencies and paramilitary groups to create chaos and undermine the government. We can even go so far as to orchestrate coups and assassinations, all in the name of protecting our economic interests. The ultimate goal of the economic hit man is to keep these countries under our control, to ensure that they remain dependent on us for their survival. We exploit their resources, manipulate their leaders, and crush any resistance, all in the name of profit and power. And as long as this system remains in place, developing countries will continue to be at the mercy of economic hit men, their futures determined by forces beyond their control.
