Perception is subjective from "summary" of The Nature of Mind, and Other Essays by David Malet Armstrong

Perception is something that varies from person to person, and there is no one universal truth in terms of how we see the world. What is considered to be true to one person may be seen as false to another, so it is important to recognize the subjective nature of perception.

  3. Each person sees the world differently, coloured by their individual past experience and beliefs systems.
  4. We construct our own subjective realities when viewing objects, scenarios or hearing stories, and these can be wildly different from somebody in a different position to us.
  5. How we perceive life and its events depend on a variety of factors, such as our cultural background, upbringing and individual preferences.
  6. The fact that humans hold many varying ways of understanding the same incident makes objectivity nearly impossible, making clear judgement difficult or misguided.
  7. No two people will see an event in exactly the same way, since we all possess varying levels of empathy and relatability to certain familiar situations.
  8. Perception is largely based on expectation; something recognized before will appear entirely different than if given no frame of reference.
