The author documents his observations of local wildlife from "summary" of The Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White

In this work, I have diligently chronicled the various creatures that inhabit the countryside of Selborne. Through patient observation and keen insight, I have sought to illuminate the habits and behaviors of the local wildlife, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals. One of the most fascinating creatures that I have had the pleasure of observing is the humble field mouse. These tiny rodents can be found scurrying about in the fields and hedgerows, their nimble movements a testament to their agility and adaptability. I have taken note of their burrows and nests, marveling at the intricacy of their construction and the resourcefulness of their inhabitants. Another denizen of Selborne that has captured my attention is the redstart, a colorful bird that flits about in the treetops with remarkable grace. I have marveled at its vibrant plumage and melodious song, which never fails to delight the ear. Through careful observation, I have been able to discern the redstart's nesting habits and feeding preferences, shedding light on its daily life. In addition to these smaller creatures, I have also turned my gaze towards the larger inhabitants of Selborne, such as the majestic deer that roam the forests and meadows. These graceful creatures embody the beauty and majesty of the natural world, their movements a symphony of power and grace. By observing their behavior and interactions, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of nature.
  1. I have endeavored to capture the essence of Selborne's wildlife, to paint a vivid portrait of the creatures that call this place home. It is my hope that my writings will inspire others to take a closer look at the natural world around them, to appreciate the beauty and wonder that surrounds us every day.
