In this district are found, in small numbers, the common lizard and the blindworm. The latter is by some considered to be venomous, but this opinion is not well founded; for though it is known to bite when irritated, yet no ill consequences ensue. It is a harmless and inoffensive creature, subsisting chiefly on insects. The common lizard is more frequently observed, basking in the sun on dry banks or walls, and darting away with great rapidity on the approach of danger. It is a beautiful and agile little animal, with bright eyes and glossy skin. The slow-worm, or blindworm, is a curious and interesting species, resembling a small snake in appearance, but without the power of injuring. It is often found in gardens and fields, where it burrows in the earth and feeds on worms and insects. It is a harmless and beneficial creature, and should not be needlessly destroyed.
