Supernovae give us insight into the life cycle of stars from "summary" of The Mysteries of the Universe by Will Gater

When a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel, it can no longer support its own weight against gravity. The core collapses rapidly, causing an explosion known as a supernova. This cataclysmic event releases an incredible amount of energy, briefly outshining an entire galaxy as the star blows itself apart. The debris from a supernova contains many different elements, which are scattered into space during the explosion. These elements include heavy metals like gold, silver, and iron, as well as lighter elements like oxygen and carbon.
