Struggle from "summary" of The Moonlight School by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The people of Troublesome Creek had lived with struggle for as long as anyone could remember. It was a way of life in those rugged hills of eastern Kentucky. Every day brought new challenges - finding enough food to eat, keeping a roof over their heads, staying healthy in a place where doctors were scarce and medicines even scarcer. And yet, despite all the obstacles they faced, the people of Troublesome Creek were a resilient bunch. They didn't give up easily, no matter how hard things got. For Lucy Wilson, the struggle was personal. As a young, educated woman from the city, she had come to Troublesome Creek to teach the adults how to read and write. But she quickly realized that her students were fighting battles she could never fully understand. Illiteracy was just the tip of the iceberg. Poverty, hunger, illness - these were the real enemies her students faced every day. Lucy knew that if she wanted to help them, she would have to do more than just teach them their ABCs. As Lucy got to know the people of Troublesome Creek, she saw the depth of their struggles. She saw mothers who worked themselves to the bone to feed their children, fathers who toiled in dangerous mines to make ends meet, children who went to bed hungry more often than not. And yet, she also saw strength in their eyes, determination in their voices. They might be down, but they were far from out. Lucy realized that the key to overcoming struggle lay not in finding quick fixes or easy solutions, but in building community. Together, the people of Troublesome Creek could support each other, share what little they had, and work towards a better future. It wouldn't be easy, and it wouldn't happen overnight. But with patience, perseverance, and a whole lot of heart, they could make it happen. And so, Lucy set out to create a moonlight school - a place where the people of Troublesome Creek could come together to learn, to grow, to dream. It wouldn't be easy, and there would be setbacks along the way. But with each small victory, each new word learned, each obstacle overcome, they came one step closer to a brighter tomorrow.
