Balance is key to a fulfilling life from "summary" of The Molecule of More by Daniel Z. Lieberman, MD,Michael E. Long

Balance is the fulcrum upon which our existence teeters - too much of one thing, too little of another, and the equilibrium that is crucial to a fulfilling life is disrupted. Just as a tightrope walker must maintain a delicate balance to avoid falling, so too must we navigate the complex interplay of our desires and needs to achieve a sense of harmony and contentment. In the grand tapestry of our lives, we are constantly pulled in different directions by the competing forces of our dopamine-driven pursuit of more and our serotonin-induced desire for stability. It is only by finding the middle path between these two extremes that we can truly experience the richness and depth of human experience. When we are consumed by the insatiable appetite for more - more money, more success, more power - we risk losing sight of the things that truly matter in life. Our relationships, our health, our sense of purpose - these are the things that give meaning to our existence, and they can easily be overshadowed by the relentless pursuit of external validation. Conversely, if we become too entrenched in our quest for stability and security, we run the risk of stagnation and complacency. Growth and progress require a certain level of risk-taking and discomfort, and it is only by pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones that we can truly reach our full potential. In the end, balance is not about standing still or playing it safe - it is about finding the dynamic tension that propels us forward while keeping us grounded. It is about embracing the ebb and flow of life, the highs and lows, the successes and failures, with equanimity and grace. Only then can we truly experience the richness and beauty of a life well-lived.
