When anxiety takes hold, it can feel all-encompassing, consuming our thoughts, feelings, and actions. We become trapped in a cycle of worry, fear, and anticipation of future events that may never come to pass. Our minds become fixated on what might happen, what we should have done differently, or how we can prevent disaster. This constant rumination only serves to fuel our anxiety, making it seem insurmountable and overwhelming. Mindfulness offers a way out of this downward spiral by bringing our attention back to the present moment. Instead of getting caught up in thoughts about the future or the past, we can learn to anchor ourselves in the here and now. By focusing on our breath, bodily sensations, or surroundings, we can cultivate a sense of presence and awareness that helps to ground us in reality.
