Emotional wellbeing linked to gut from "summary" of The Mind-Gut Connection by Emeran Mayer

The idea that emotional well-being is closely tied to the gut may seem strange at first. After all, we often think of emotions as residing in the brain, not the digestive system. However, recent research has shown that there is a complex and intricate relationship between the brain and the gut, known as the mind-gut connection. This connection is based on the fact that the gut is not just a simple tube that processes food, but a sophisticated system that is in constant communication with the brain. The gut has its own nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system, which can operate independently of the brain. This system is responsible for controlling digestion, but also plays a crucial role in regulating emotions. One key player in this connection is the gut microbiota, the trillions of microbes that live in our intestines. These microbes can influence our mood and behavior by producing neurotransmitters and other signaling molecules that can affect the brain. In fact, the gut microbiota has been called the "second brain" because of its ability to communicate with the central nervous system. Stress, in particular, can have a profound impact on the mind-gut connection. When we are stressed, the brain sends signals to the gut that can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiota and lead to digestive problems. At the same time, the gut can send signals to the brain that can worsen stress and anxiety.
