The Milky Way's disk is where most of the galaxy's stars reside from "summary" of The Milky Way by Moiya McTier

The Milky Way is home to billions of stars, each occupying a specific region within the galaxy. While stars can be found throughout the Milky Way, the majority of them are situated within the galactic disk. This flat, disk-like structure is where the bulk of the galaxy's stars reside, forming a luminous band that stretches across the night sky. The Milky Way's disk is a dynamic and bustling region, with stars of varying ages, sizes, and compositions. Young, hot blue stars can be found in the spiral arms of the disk, where new stars are constantly being born from the gravitational collapse of interstellar gas and dust. These regions are characterized by intense star formation activity, giving rise to bright, massive stars that illuminate the surrounding space. In contrast, the central bulge of the Milky Way's disk is home to older, cooler stars that have been shining for billions of years. These stars have completed their main sequence phase of nuclear fusion and have evolved into stable, long-lasting giants or white dwarfs. The central bulge is a densely packed region, with stars orbiting the galaxy's supermassive black hole at the center. As one moves away from the central bulge towards the outer edges of the disk, the density of stars gradually decreases. The outer regions of the disk contain a mix of young and old stars, along with vast regions of interstellar gas and dust that contribute to ongoing star formation processes. These outer regions are also where the spiral arms of the galaxy become less defined, giving way to a more diffuse and scattered distribution of stars.
  1. The Milky Way's disk serves as the primary home for the galaxy's stellar population, hosting stars of various ages and characteristics. From the bustling spiral arms to the serene central bulge, this region of the galaxy is a testament to the diverse and dynamic nature of stars within our cosmic neighborhood.
