Nostalgia for memories shared from "summary" of The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

I ache for the past. It's not the past that I lived, necessarily, but the past that I wish I had lived. The past that everyone wishes they had lived - where the perfect moments are perfect and the painful ones barely exist. It's a nostalgia for something that never was, a longing for a shared history that was never shared. I watch movies and read books and see people on the street, and I wonder if they have these memories that I long for. The memories of first kisses and quiet nights and inside jokes that only they understand. The memories of shared laughter and shared tears, of stolen glances and whispered words. The memories that make a life feel full and meaningful. I see old couples holding hands and young couples laughing together, and I wonder if they know how lucky they are.
