It's not that we can't communicate. It's that we've been communicating for too long. We've reached that point where we assume that we know what the other person is going to say before they even open their mouth. And so we stop listening. We stop paying attention to the nuances and the shifts in tone that actually convey the true meaning behind the words.
It's a dangerous game we play, this guessing. Because more often than not, we guess wrong. We misinterpret a word, a phrase, a gesture, and suddenly we find ourselves in the midst of an argument that neither of us saw coming. And the worst part is, neither of us knows how to stop it.
