Loss of free will from "summary" of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

In "The Lottery", Shirley Jackson explores the idea of loss of free will in a society where citizens are subject to the whims of tradition. It shows how blindly following customs can lead to disastrous consequences, illustrating how individuals can be stripped of their freedom without any conscious knowledge.
  1. Everyone wants to think they have control of their own destiny, but sometimes it's taken away from us. Things that we thought were within our control can be completely out of hand in a snap and all of the free will that we once had is gone.

  3. To completely surrender one’s will requires an immense amount of vulnerability; trusting fate and hoping it turns out as we wished. Knowing our limited power yet still handing over the reins means being willing to accept whatever comes next.
  4. It's sad to think there are certain aspects of our lives that are simply written in stone and out of our grasp. We may try, but if the tide has already made its turn, it's hard to go against it no matter how much we'd want to.
  5. At times, it feels like life has planned everything for us without giving us a chance to be a part of the decision-making process. Even though it might hurt and leave us feeling lost, it's important to remember that this is only temporary.
  6. What would it feel like to suddenly not make any choices in life? We take freedom for granted, but when it's gone, that reality truly hits us.
  7. Sometimes, we're helpless in situations we face in life. Despite our best intentions and biggest efforts, some things just aren't meant to be. That doesn't stop us from trying, but it does prevent us from completely controlling what happens in the end.
