Distracted listening is a common barrier to communication from "summary" of The Lost Art of Listening, Third Edition by Michael P. Nichols,Martha B. Straus
When we are distracted while listening, we fail to fully engage with the speaker and their message. This distraction can come in many forms - from external factors like noise or visual distractions, to internal factors like our own thoughts and emotions. Whatever the cause, the end result is the same: we are not fully present in the conversation. This lack of presence can hinder our ability to truly understand and connect with the speaker.
One common form of distraction is when we are preoccupied with our own thoughts and concerns. For example, if we are worried about a looming deadline at work, we may find it difficult to focus on what our friend is saying about their recent vacation. Our minds are elsewhere, and as a result, we miss important details and nuances in the conversation. This can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications, as we are not fully tuned in to what is being said.
