Booth's escape after shooting Lincoln from "summary" of The Lincoln Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer,Josh Mensch

After committing the heinous act of shooting President Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth knew he had to make a swift and elusive escape. With a plan already in place, Booth managed to slip away from Ford's Theatre and into the night without raising suspicion. Using his familiarity with the layout of the theatre, he was able to navigate through the backstage area and out onto the streets of Washington, D. C. As chaos erupted in the theatre following the assassination, Booth took advantage of the confusion to slip past the authorities who were quickly converging on the scene. Making his way to a nearby horse that had been conveniently placed for his getaway, Booth mounted the animal and rode off into the darkness, leaving behind a stunned and grieving crowd. Booth's escape was not a spontaneous act - it had been carefully planned and orchestrated in advance. He had allies who were ready to assist him in his flight, ensuring that he would be able to evade capture and remain at large for an extended period of time. Despite the best efforts of law enforcement officials, Booth's knowledge of the area and his cunning tactics allowed him to outwit his pursuers and disappear into the shadows.
