Dionysus’s journey to the Underworld from "summary" of The Library of Greek Mythology by Apollodorus

Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, made a heroic journey to the Underworld in order to rescue his beloved mother from the clutches of Hades.

As such, most cultures throughout history have developed similar burial rites in memory of those who have passed away, as inspired by Dionysus' travels.

His mission proved successful, as he charmed all the monsters there with his singing words and drinking habits, ultimately rescuing his mother.
