The beast that was lodged in Charlie cranking out drink and crazy ideas. It was the sort of thing you'd find in a nightmare, some furred, hoofed beast, wobbling on its hind legs. The creature had been a dim, dark presence in our house, like the smell of mildew or the sound of the furnace turning on in the night. It had lived in the shadows, a secret we weren't supposed to talk about. But it was always there, lurking, waiting for the chance to pounce. Charlie was its willing host, the vessel through which it could wreak havoc on our family. He was a man possessed, driven by a need that was insatiable. His thirst for alcohol was unquenchable, like a desert wanderer lost in an endless sea of sand. He would drink until he couldn't stand, until he couldn't remember who he was or where he came from. The consequences of his drinking were clear to see. He would stumble home late at night, reeking of booze and sweat. He would pick fights with our mother, hurling insults...
