In the squalid districts of Packingtown, there lurked a sinister breed of men who preyed upon the vulnerable and desperate. These were the loan sharks, ruthless and cunning, who saw in the impoverished immigrants easy targets for their nefarious schemes. With promises of quick cash and easy repayment terms, they lured in their victims, trapping them in a web of debt from which there was no escape. The immigrants, fresh off the boat and eager to build a better life for themselves and their families, were easy pickings for these predators. They lacked the knowledge and resources to navigate the complex financial system of their new homeland, and so they fell into the clutches of the loan sharks, who saw them as nothing more than sources of easy money.
