The Lithuanian family had come to Chicago with high hopes, seeking a better life in the land of opportunity. However, reality quickly set in as they found themselves struggling to make ends meet in the harsh urban environment. The family faced numerous challenges in their new home. They had to navigate a foreign language, unfamiliar customs, and a daunting urban landscape that was vastly different from the rural village they had left behind. They found themselves living in a crowded tenement building, where they had to contend with poor living conditions, overcrowding, and unsanitary surroundings. Despite their best efforts, the family struggled to find stable employment.
