Emotions are transient and should not be clung to from "summary" of The Joy of Living by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche,Eric Swanson
Our emotions are like passing clouds in the sky; they come and go without us having to do anything. Just as we don't try to hold onto a cloud in the sky, we shouldn't try to cling to our emotions. When we hold onto our emotions, we create suffering for ourselves. It's like trying to grasp onto water - the more we try to hold it, the more it slips through our fingers. Emotions are part of the natural ebb and flow of life. They are not permanent, and they are not who we are. We are not our emotions; we are the awareness that observes them. By recognizing the impermanence of our emotions, we can free ourselves from their hold. We can learn to let them come and go without getting caught up in them. When we cling to our emotions, we create a sense of solidity and permanence around them. We start to believe that our emotions define us, that they are an unchanging part of who we are. But this is simply not true. Emotions are like waves on the surface of the ocean - they rise and fall, but the ocean itself remains unchanged. By letting go of our attachment to our emotions, we can find a sense of freedom and spaciousness within ourselves. We can learn to ride the waves of our emotions without being swept away by them. This doesn't mean suppressing or denying our emotions; it means allowing them to be as they are, without trying to control or manipulate them. When we stop clinging to our emotions, we allow ourselves to experience the full range of human experience. We can feel joy without fearing its departure, and we can feel sadness without becoming overwhelmed by it. We can cultivate a sense of equanimity that allows us to navigate the ups and downs of life with grace and ease.Similar Posts
