Discernment is the art of decisionmaking with God’s guidance from "summary" of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by James Martin

Discernment is not always an easy task. It requires patience, reflection, and a willingness to listen deeply to the movements of one’s heart. In the Ignatian tradition, discernment is seen as a process of seeking God’s will in the midst of life’s complexities. This process involves listening to one’s desires, fears, and hopes, and discerning where God may be leading. At the heart of this process is the belief that God is actively involved in our lives, guiding us towards our truest selves. Through prayer, reflection, and spiritual direction, we can learn to discern God’s presence and invitations in our lives. This involves a deep sense of trust in God’s love and goodness, as well as a willingness to let go of our own preconceived notions and desires. One key aspect of discernment is learning to distinguish between the movements of the Spirit and the temptations of the Evil One. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, believed that God speaks to us through our deepest desires, leading us towards love, joy, and greater freedom. The Evil One, on the other hand, seeks to lead us away from God’s love, towards selfishness, fear, and isolation. Discernment is not a once-and-for-all decision, but an ongoing process of seeking God’s will in the midst of life’s changing circumstances. It requires a willingness to be open to God’s surprises, and a humility to admit when we may have been mistaken. Ultimately, discernment is about learning to trust in God’s love and guidance, even when the path ahead may seem unclear. In the end, discernment is about learning to live in greater alignment with God’s will for our lives. It is a process of deepening our relationship with God, and learning to surrender our own will to God’s greater purposes. Through discernment, we can learn to see the world with new eyes, and to walk with greater freedom, joy, and love.
