We are drowning in information from "summary" of The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data by Michael P. Lynch

In the digital age, we are constantly bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information. This deluge of data comes at us from all directions, through our smartphones, computers, tablets, and other devices. We are inundated with news alerts, social media updates, emails, texts, and countless other sources of information. The sheer volume of data can be paralyzing, leaving us feeling lost and confused amidst the flood of content. As we struggle to keep up with the endless stream of information, we find ourselves in a state of constant distraction. Our attention is fragmented, pulled in multiple directions at once. We skim headlines, scroll through feeds, and click on links without truly engaging with the content. This superficial engagement leads to a superficial understanding of the world around us. Moreover, the abundance of information can lead to a sense of complacency. With so much data at our fingertips, we may feel as though we have all the answers we need. We rely on search engines and algorithms to provide us with quick answers, without taking the time to think critically or reflect on the information we receive. This reliance on technology can erode our ability to think for ourselves and form independent opinions. In the midst of this information overload, we may also struggle to discern fact from fiction. Misinformation spreads like wildfire online, making it difficult to separate truth from falsehood. Without the proper tools and skills to evaluate sources and verify information, we are vulnerable to manipulation and deception.
  1. The deluge of information can hinder our ability to truly know and understand the world around us. We may have access to more data than ever before, but this does not necessarily translate to greater knowledge or wisdom. In order to navigate this sea of information effectively, we must cultivate critical thinking skills, hone our ability to discern truth from falsehood, and strive to engage with content in a meaningful and thoughtful way.
