Understanding is becoming more elusive from "summary" of The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data by Michael P. Lynch

In our current age of big data, the pursuit of understanding is becoming increasingly difficult. The sheer volume of information available at our fingertips can be overwhelming, leading to a sense of confusion rather than clarity. While we may know more than ever before, the depth of our understanding seems to be diminishing. One of the reasons for this is the way in which information is presented to us online. Algorithms tailor our news feeds and search results to match our preferences, creating what has been termed a "filter bubble." This bubble limits our exposure to diverse perspectives and can reinforce our existing beliefs, hindering our ability to truly understand complex issues. Furthermore, the rapid pace of information dissemination on the internet can lead to a superficial engagement with the material. We may skim through articles or share headlines without fully absorbing the content. This can give us the illusion of knowledge without the substance of understanding. Another factor contributing to the elusive nature of understanding in the digital age is the prevalence of misinformation and fake news. In a world where anyone can publish content online, it can be challenging to discern fact from fiction. This blurring of the lines between truth and falsehood can erode our trust in information sources and make it difficult to form coherent narratives. In addition, the internet has changed the way we process information, shifting our focus from deep reading to quick scanning. This can lead to a fragmented understanding of complex issues, as we jump from one source to another without fully immersing ourselves in the material. As a result, our grasp of the underlying concepts may become superficial and fleeting.
  1. The internet has revolutionized the way we access information, but it has also posed challenges to our ability to truly understand the world around us. In this age of information overload and instant gratification, cultivating a deep and meaningful understanding of complex issues requires conscious effort and critical thinking skills. As we navigate this digital landscape, it is essential to question our assumptions, seek out diverse perspectives, and engage thoughtfully with the material we encounter.
