Technology affects our ability to think critically from "summary" of The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data by Michael P. Lynch

In the age of Big Data, the technology we use on a daily basis has a profound impact on our ability to think critically. With the vast amount of information available at our fingertips, it is easy to fall into the trap of relying on quick answers and surface-level knowledge rather than engaging in deep, thoughtful analysis. This can lead to a lack of critical thinking skills, as we become more accustomed to skimming the surface of information rather than delving into its complexities. Furthermore, the algorithms that power many of the technologies we use are designed to cater to our preferences and biases, creating what is known as a "filter bubble." This filter bubble can limit the information we are exposed to, reinforcing our existing beliefs and preventing us from considering alternative viewpoints. As a result, our ability to think critically about complex issues may be hindered, as we are not exposed to a diverse range of perspectives that could challenge our assumptions. In addition, the constant connectivity and instant gratification provided by technology can lead to a shortened attention span and a decreased ability to focus on one task for an extended period of time. This can make it difficult to engage in deep, sustained critical thinking, as our minds become accustomed to jumping from one piece of information to the next without fully digesting or analyzing it.
  1. While technology has undoubtedly brought many benefits and advancements, it is important to be aware of its potential impact on our ability to think critically. By recognizing the ways in which technology can shape our thinking patterns and behavior, we can take steps to mitigate these effects and cultivate our critical thinking skills in a digital age.
