Henrietta's family was not informed of the use of her cells from "summary" of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Henrietta Lacks' cells were taken without her knowledge or consent. Scientists at Johns Hopkins Hospital removed a sample of her cells during a routine biopsy without informing her or seeking permission. These cells would go on to become the first immortal cell line, known as HeLa, that would be used in countless scientific experiments and medical breakthroughs.
