Henrietta Lacks was a young Black woman who entered Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951 seeking treatment for cervical cancer. During her examination, a doctor took a small sample of tissue from her tumor without her knowledge or consent. This sample would eventually lead to one of the most significant medical discoveries in history. Henrietta's cells, known as HeLa cells, were the first human cells to be successfully grown and replicated in a laboratory setting.
