Human life has four stages from "summary" of The Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar

Human life has four stages, just as the ages of man are said to have four divisions. The first stage is that of the student, when a person receives instruction and prepares for the duties of life. This period is marked by the acquisition of knowledge and the development of skills that will be useful in later stages. The second stage is that of the householder, when a person takes on responsibilities for a family and a career. During this time, one must work to support themselves and their loved ones, while also contributing to the welfare of society. The third stage is that of the hermit, when a person begins to withdraw from worldly concerns and focus on spiritual growth. This is a time of reflection and meditation, when one seeks to understand the deeper truths of life and the universe. Finally, the fourth stage is that of the ascetic, when a person renounces all worldly attachments and devotes themselves entirely to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment. Each of these stages is important in its own way, and each has its own challenges and rewards. In the first stage, one must learn the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in life. In the second stage, one must balance the demands of work and family with the desire for personal growth. In the third stage, one must confront the deeper questions of existence and seek to find meaning in a complex world. And in the fourth stage, one must let go of all attachments and desires in order to achieve true spiritual liberation.
  1. A person can achieve a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. This process of growth and development is essential for spiritual evolution, and it is through the experiences of each stage that a person can ultimately reach their true potential.
