The systematic deportation of Jews to extermination camps was a key element of the Nazis' plan to eradicate European Jewry during the Holocaust. From 1942 onwards, this process was carried out with ruthless efficiency across occupied Europe. The Nazis established a network of transit camps and ghettos to gather Jews from different regions before transporting them to the extermination camps. Once in the transit camps, Jews were subjected to brutal living conditions, deprivation, and abuse. Families were often torn apart, with men, women, and children being separated upon arrival. The deportation trains were packed with hundreds of people, who were forced to endure long and harrowing journeys to the extermination camps. Many did not survive the trip, succumbing to disease, starvation, or exhaustion.
