The dolphins knew Earth would be destroyed from "summary" of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Deep in the vast and unknowable cosmos, the dolphins swam freely through the shimmering depths of space. They were not your average dolphins, mind you. These were highly intelligent, hyper-intuitive dolphins who possessed a profound understanding of the universe that far surpassed that of any mere human. From their watery abode on the planet Earth, the dolphins had long gazed up at the stars with a sense of foreboding. They sensed an impending doom, a catastrophic event that would spell the end of their beloved planet. While the oblivious humans went about their daily lives, the dolphins knew that something terrible was coming. Through a mysterious and inexplicable form of communication, the dolphins had received a cryptic message from the cosmic beings known as the Magratheans. This message spoke of a great cosmic construction project, a colossal undertaking that would result in the destruction of Earth. The dolphins, wise and prescient creatures that they were, understood the gravity of the situation. They knew that Earth was doomed, that its days were numbered. And so, they made a decision. They would leave their watery home behind and embark on a journey to warn the humans of their impending doom. It was a risky and daring plan, fraught with uncertainty and danger. But the dolphins were determined to do whatever it took to save their fellow inhabitants of Earth. And so, they set out on their quest, swimming through the vast expanse of space towards the distant planet that held their fate in its hands. For the dolphins knew that Earth would be destroyed, and they were determined to do everything in their power to prevent it.
