The answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42 from "summary" of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Deep Thought, the supercomputer, was created by a race of hyper-intelligent, pan-dimensional beings to determine the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. After seven and a half million years of computation, Deep Thought revealed that the answer is 42. However, the beings were dissatisfied as they did not know what the Ultimate Question actually was. To find the Ultimate Question, another supercomputer called Earth was designed. Earth was disguised as a planet and populated with organic life forms, including humans. The human protagonist, Arthur Dent, is unknowingly part of this grand experiment. Throughout his adventures in space, Arthur unknowingly comes across various clues and hints that suggest the significance of the number 42. As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that the number 42 is deeply intertwined with the fabric of the universe. It is more than just a random number; it symbolizes the quest for knowledge, understanding, and the meaning of existence. The characters in the story, including Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox, are constantly seeking answers and grappling with the mysteries of the cosmos. The concept of 42 serves as a metaphor for the human desire to seek meaning and purpose in a vast and unknowable universe. It represents the eternal quest for knowledge and enlightenment, as well as the realization that some questions may never have definitive answers. In a universe full of uncertainty and chaos, the number 42 stands as a beacon of hope and curiosity, urging us to continue exploring and questioning our place in the cosmos.
