Theban General Epaminondas reforms the army from "summary" of The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides

The Theban General Epaminondas made significant reforms to the army, fundamentally changing the structure and tactics of the Theban military. These reforms were crucial in transforming the Theban army into a formidable fighting force that could rival the powerful Spartan army. Epaminondas recognized the weaknesses in the traditional phalanx formation used by the Greek armies and sought to innovate new strategies that would give his soldiers an advantage on the battlefield. One of the key reforms that Epaminondas implemented was the deepening of the phalanx formation from the traditional eight ranks to a more formidable fifty ranks. This new formation allowed the Theban soldiers to concentrate their strength and push through enemy lines with greater force and effectiveness. By increasing the depth of the phalanx, Epaminondas created a more cohesive and impenetrable formation that could overpower the enemy with sheer force and momentum. In addition to restructuring the phalanx formation, Epaminondas also introduced new tactics that emphasized mobility and flexibility on the battlefield. He trained his soldiers to be more agile and responsive, allowing them to adapt to changing situations and exploit openings in the enemy's defense. This strategic approach gave the Thebans a tactical advantage over their opponents, enabling them to outmaneuver and outflank larger, more traditional armies. Furthermore, Epaminondas focused on improving the training and discipline of his soldiers, instilling a sense of unity and cohesion within the army. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and cooperation, encouraging his soldiers to work together towards a common goal. This sense of camaraderie and mutual support strengthened the morale of the troops and enhanced their overall combat effectiveness.
  1. Epaminondas's reforms revolutionized the Theban army and paved the way for their military success against the Spartans and other Greek city-states. His innovative tactics and strategic vision transformed the Thebans into a dominant force in ancient Greece, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest military leaders of his time.
