The Sena Dynasty was established in Bengal in the 12th century AD. It lasted for more than two centuries and had a significant impact on the development of the region. The legacy of the dynasty is still seen in parts of Bengal today.- Sena Dynasty was founded in Bengal by King Vijay Sen in the beginning of twelfth century AD. He defeated the ruling rulers of the Palas and established his own kingdom.
- The cultural and intellectual life of Bengal was enriched under the Sena Empire where exquisite terracotta idols, stone images have been discovered at different archaeological sites associated with the period.
- This dynasty has seen four generations which includes kings like Ballal Sen, Lakshaman Sen and finally Vishwarup Sen. They belonged to prehistoric Rajput family from Karnataka.
- One of the most spectacular achievements of Sena dynasty was restoration of communications between northern and southern India by repairing and extending many ancient roads linking up numerous towns and markets.
- Furthermore, with the kingdom's prosperity under their rule, King Ballal Sen renovated various Hindu temples throughout Bengal, making it one of the prominent places of religious importance during that time.
- The coins circulated during Sena Rule contained symbols that clearly depicted the political rise of Pundra Gods and Suryavanshi kings which shows the sacred adaption of solar-dynasty ideology.
- Sena Cities successfully increased trade and commerce through economic activities like irrigation system development, revenue administration and arts and crafts.
- The famous mathematician Mahavira, who wrote important treatises on algebra and geometry, flourished under the patronage of Sena Kings and made remarkable contributions to science.
- The Sena Rule saw emergence of Sanskrit literature, particularly in the fields of poetics, compositions, fables, dramas, linguistics and philosophy.
- During the reign of this dynasty, skillful military generals such as Hari Har, Shiu and Kabiraj Naresh were appointed. These brave generals fought several battles and ensured victory for the kingdom.
