Persian War between Greece and Persia from "summary" of The Histories by Herodotus

The conflict between the Greeks and the Persians is a tale of great significance, one that has been told and retold through the ages. It all began when the Persians, under the rule of King Darius, sought to expand their empire by conquering the Greek city-states. The Greeks, however, were not about to let their freedom be taken away without a fight. The first major clash between the two sides occurred at the Battle of Marathon. The Persians, who had landed on the shores of Marathon, were met by a small but determined force of Athenian soldiers. Against all odds, the Greeks emerged victorious, dealing a heavy blow to the Persian forces. This unexpected defeat sent shockwaves through the Persian Empire, prompting King Darius to seek revenge. Darius began to gather a massive army, intent on crushing the Greeks once and for all. However, before he could launch his invasion, he died, leaving his son Xerxes to carry on his mission. Xerxes, determined to avenge his father's defeat, assembled a vast army and navy to march on Greece. The stage was set for one of the most epic conflicts in history. The Greeks, led by the Spartan king Leonidas, made a valiant stand at the narrow pass of Thermopylae, where they held off the Persian forces for several days. Despite their bravery, the Greeks were eventually betrayed, and the Persians were able to break through their defenses. As the Persians advanced further into Greek territory, the city-states banded together to form a united front against the invaders. The decisive battle took place at Salamis, where the Greek navy, under the command of Themistocles, dealt a crushing blow to the Persian fleet. This victory turned the tide of the war in favor of the Greeks.
