The wheels of justice turned not in search of truth and righteousness, but in service of a cruel and oppressive regime. The accusations were often vague and unsubstantiated, mere whispers of dissent or perceived disloyalty. No evidence was needed, no trial conducted with fairness and impartiality. The accused were condemned before they even set foot in a courtroom, their fate sealed by the whims of those in power. In the eyes of the state, they were guilty simply for holding beliefs that challenged the status quo.
