Greek religion worshipped a pantheon of gods from "summary" of The Greeks by Paul Cartledge

Greek religion was polytheistic, meaning that it involved the worship of multiple gods. These gods were believed to have control over various aspects of the natural world and human life. The Greeks did not believe in a single, all-powerful deity like the God of the monotheistic religions that would come later. The Greek pantheon was made up of a diverse group of gods and goddesses, each with their own specific roles and responsibilities. For example, Zeus was the king of the gods and the god of the sky and thunder, while his wife Hera was the goddess of marriage and childbirth. Other important deities included Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, and Apollo, the god of the sun and music. The Greeks believed that these gods and goddesses lived on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. They were thought to be immortal and possessed of great power, but they were also believed to have human-like emotions and flaws. This made them more relatable to the ancient Greeks, who saw the gods as both protectors and punishers. The worship of these gods was an integral part of everyday life for the ancient Greeks. They believed that by honoring the gods through prayers, sacrifices, and rituals, they could gain favor and protection. Temples were built in honor of the gods, and festivals and ceremonies were held to celebrate them. The Greeks also consulted oracles, such as the famous Oracle of Delphi, to seek guidance from the gods.
  1. The concept of a pantheon of gods was central to Greek religion and culture. It shaped the way the ancient Greeks viewed the world around them and their place within it. The gods were not distant and unknowable beings, but rather active participants in the lives of mortals. This belief in multiple gods with distinct personalities and powers was a defining characteristic of Greek religion.
