The fleeting nature of happiness from "summary" of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The notion that happiness is transient permeates the narrative of "The Great Gatsby." Characters in the story are constantly pursuing happiness, only to have it slip through their fingers like grains of sand. Gatsby, for instance, spends years amassing wealth and throwing extravagant parties in the hope of winning back Daisy's love, believing that she is the key to his happiness. However, when he finally reunites with her, his happiness is short-lived as he realizes that their past cannot be recaptured. Similarly, Daisy Buchanan, despite her outward appearance of wealth and privilege, is disillusioned with her life and longs for something more.
