The facade of appearances from "summary" of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

In the world of West Egg, appearances are everything. The characters in this story are constantly trying to maintain a façade of wealth, success, and happiness, even when the reality is quite different. Jay Gatsby himself is the epitome of this concept. He throws extravagant parties, wears expensive clothes, and drives a flashy car, all in an effort to present himself as a wealthy and powerful man. However, as we come to learn, much of his wealth is built on lies and deceit. His mansion is nothing more than a hollow shell, filled with expensive possessions but lacking in true substance. Daisy Buchanan is another character who relies heavily on appearances. She presents herself as a delicate and innocent flower, but beneath the surface lies a woman who is shallow, selfish, and careless. Her marriage to Tom is based on appearances rather than love, and she is willing to overlook his infidelities as long as they do not tarnish her reputation. Tom Buchanan, on the other hand, is more concerned with appearances than anyone else. He uses his wealth and social status to exert power over others, believing that this is what makes him a superior man. However, in reality, Tom is a violent and insecure individual who uses his façade of success to mask his own shortcomings. Even Nick Carraway, the narrator of the story, is not immune to the allure of appearances. He is drawn into the world of wealth and privilege, and finds himself caught up in the drama and deceit that come with it. Despite his initial reservations, Nick becomes entangled in the lives of those around him, unable to resist the glamour and excitement of their world.
  1. The concept of the façade of appearances is a central theme in this story, highlighting the ways in which people use superficial qualities to hide their true selves. In the end, we are left to question whether the pursuit of wealth and status is worth sacrificing our authenticity and integrity.
