In the dust in the sunset a thin bat, a baby bat, hung at a broken twig. The old one, the mother, was near. She could feel him. She could feel him hanging. This was her fourth litter. She had earned no money this year. She had gone out among the farmers. She had begged a little. She had hung in the dusk for insects. But this year the insects had no strength in them. This year she was heavy with child. She was an old mother. She had seen many of her children fall. She knew when they fell through the air that they would never strike the ground. So now she waited. There was no need for her to fly. She knew. And the old one lay on her back and waited. And the baby bat hung at a broken twig near her. He could feel her. The anger of a man was added to the anger of a woman, and the anger of a woman was added to the anger of a man. And something worse than anger moved through the land. Something worse than anger knew the land and was present in the land....
