Pride comes before a fall from "summary" of The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

Wang Lung was a man of the earth. He toiled on his land day in and day out, his hands calloused from working the fields. As he prospered, his pride grew along with his wealth. He began to look down upon those who were less fortunate, believing himself to be better than them because of his success. His arrogance blinded him to the suffering of others, as he became consumed by his own importance. He no longer showed kindness or compassion to those in need, choosing instead to revel in his own power and success. He believed himself to be invincible, untouchable, above the struggles of ordinary men. But the earth is a great equalizer, and it does not show favoritism to those who are proud. Wang Lung's fall from grace was swift and brutal, as disaster struck and his fortunes turned. He lost everything he had worked so hard to build, his wealth disappearing as quickly as it had come. In his moment of greatest need, Wang Lung was humbled. He was forced to confront the reality of his own arrogance and pride, coming face to face with the consequences of his actions. He realized that his downfall was a direct result of his own hubris, his belief that he was above others and immune to the trials of life. Through his suffering, Wang Lung learned a valuable lesson. He understood that pride is a dangerous thing, a false sense of superiority that can lead to one's downfall. He came to see the importance of humility and empathy, of recognizing one's own limitations and treating others with kindness and respect. In the end, Wang Lung emerged from his fall a changed man. He no longer saw himself as separate from the earth and its people, but as a part of a greater whole. He had learned the hard way that pride comes before a fall, and that true strength lies in humility and compassion.
