The ancient science of magic may be defined as the attempt to control the natural world by supernatural means. One of the principal branches of this science is known as sympathetic magic, which is based on the idea that like produces like, or that an effect resembles its cause. There are two main types of sympathetic magic: the law of similarity and the law of contact or contagion. The law of similarity operates on the principle that things which resemble each other are believed to influence each other. This type of sympathetic magic is based on the idea of imitation, where the magician seeks to produce a desired effect by imitating it. For example, in order to bring rain, a magician might pour water on the ground to imitate the action of the clouds.
