Morality does not require religion from "summary" of The God Delusion - by Richard Dawkins by Instaread

The idea that morality does not require religion is a central theme in the discussion of atheism. Many people believe that without religion, there can be no basis for a moral code. This assumption is based on the belief that morality comes from a divine source, and without that source, there can be no objective standard for right and wrong. However, this argument is flawed for several reasons. First and foremost, there is no evidence to suggest that morality must come from a supernatural source. In fact, the idea that morality is rooted in religion is a relatively recent development in human history. Before the rise of organized religion, societies had their own moral codes that were based on practical considerations and social norms. Furthermore, the belief that morality requires religion overlooks the fact that many of the moral teachings found in religious texts are not unique to any one faith. Concepts such as the Golden Rule – treating others as you would like to be treated – are found in various religious traditions as well as secular philosophies. In addition, the argument that morality requires religion fails to account for the fact that religious beliefs can actually lead to immoral behavior. History is filled with examples of atrocities committed in the name of religion, from the Crusades to the Spanish Inquisition. It is clear that simply believing in a higher power does not guarantee moral behavior.
  1. The idea that morality does not require religion is not only supported by evidence but also offers a more compelling explanation for the existence of moral codes. By recognizing that morality can exist independently of religion, we open ourselves up to a more nuanced understanding of ethics and a greater appreciation for the complexity of human morality.
